Consolidation: practising my skills

March 14, 2024

Of course, I came away from my Discover/Explore weekend full of plans and ideas and the first one was to hire a kayak down at Studland and have a go at everything on my own. Try out my new strokes, get properly comfortable in a kayak, maybe even have a go at some self-rescue. I … More Consolidation: practising my skills

I did my Discover and Explore Awards

March 7, 2024

In the time since I first tried to do my 1 Star and the second time, the entire awards system was overhauled the 1 Star ceased to exist. As far as I could tell, the Star awards were replaced with, among other things, the Personal Performance Awards and the closest equivalent to 1 Star was … More I did my Discover and Explore Awards

My first canoeing experience

February 29, 2024

I’d only really just sorted out in my head what the difference was between a kayak and a canoe. I can’t comprehend not knowing that now. They’re so different and the only similarity really is that they’re a lot longer than they are wide and they go on the water. It’s like not being able … More My first canoeing experience

Poole Park in the plague

February 22, 2024

I might have got quite into paddling the next summer but that was the summer of 2020 and we all know what happened there. But during one of the phases of “you can go out and do things but still keep 2m away”, I realised I could hire a paddleboard and go out on Poole … More Poole Park in the plague

Paddling with the Rangers

February 15, 2024

A week or so later, I took my Rangers out paddling for the first time. I don’t know why I’d never done that or why I suddenly had the idea to. There was a local Ranger leader working at a watersports centre and so off we went. We started with kayaking and then moved on … More Paddling with the Rangers

Taking out the inflatable kayak

February 8, 2024

I was prepared. I had a buoyancy aid. I had a wetsuit, the same one I’d used on my practice trip. I had my old neoprene caving socks. At some point for some reason now lost in time, I had a rash vest aka “a wetsuit t-shirt”. I had a footpump suitable for inflating my … More Taking out the inflatable kayak

The first kayak trip I enjoyed

February 1, 2024

Two years later. Lidl had inflatable kayaks and I bought one. I was actually on my way to North Devon at the time. Now, maybe an inflatable kayak wasn’t a great idea but I’d been out twice by then and I’ve been seeing the local news all my life. I knew that there were certain … More The first kayak trip I enjoyed

My second kayaking trip

January 25, 2024

Why, when the first went so badly, did I go back for a second kayaking trip? Well, for some reason I decided that after capsizing six times in ten minutes during my only previous kayaking experience, it was time to take on my BCU 1 Star award. I know. It didn’t feel fortunate at the … More My second kayaking trip

My first kayaking trip

January 18, 2024

My actual first kayaking trip was when I was a Guide. We went to Hamworthy School’s tiny swimming pool, which I imagine could probably only fit two or three kayaks at a time, and we learned to roll. Then I probably didn’t set foot in a kayak for nearly twenty years, until I went out … More My first kayaking trip

I’ve only managed three or four selfies out on the water at the boathouse this summer - of the nine sessions I got to, one was at the pool, two were shore nights and we swapped two lots of kayaking for rafting, which only leaves four kayaking evenings and you do have to squeeze selfies around actually being a helper. But I want the occasional bit of photographic evidence I’ve been out on the water with Girlguiding, giving girls adventurous opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have! #shepaddles #girlguidingpaddles #kayaking #haveadventures Please, picture me in the reeds… taking shelter for a few minutes from an appallingly hot sun! #shepaddles #gopaddling #canoeing It’s the end of term and end of the boat club season for this year, so we presented the girls with their badges - our very own boathouse badge and the Guides Water adventure badge. They used to earn the Outdoor Pursuits interest badge, discontinued around 2018 but we’ve finally run out of stock of those, so if anyone has any ideas for replacements, let me know. #shepaddles #girlguidingpaddles #guidebadges Old Harry dead ahead! Taking it slowly and gently and lazily along the coastline and out to my ultimate destination, landing on Old Harry Rocks. #shepaddles #gopaddling #seakayaking #studland Get it from the right angle and Studland can almost look quite tropical. #shepaddles #gopaddling #kayaking Made it all the way to the road bridge in record time! #shepaddles #canoeing Last boat club selfie of the season #shepaddles #girlguidingpaddles #kayaking For the last boat club session of the year, we took the girls on a mini expedition. It was supposed to be through the marina and round the outside but it was a bit windy and the sea was a bit rough outside the shelter of the sea wall so we retraced our steps. #shepaddles #girlguidingpaddles #kayaking After three seasons, I finally have a boat that’s “mine”. Some of the other instructors have marked one of our four identical Jives as theirs but I just grab whichever is closest that’s unmarked. Now I have one with the footrests set up for me with my name written across it that everyone knows is mine! It’s a bit wonky but not bad considering I was sitting in the kayak when I wrote it - upside down. #shepaddles #kayaking #girlguidingpaddles
