Getting the boathouse back together for 2025

January 30, 2025

It’s very early but we’ve now had our first boathouse meeting of the year! We do this in January – get a tide timetable, go through our calendars and our requests and put all our boat club and unit sessions in so everyone’s ready for the summer term. Unfortunately, it does mean that anyone who … More Getting the boathouse back together for 2025

How to get kids into kayaking

October 31, 2024

Since it’s Halloween today, I wish I had something spooooky for this blog but I don’t. I’ve hung up my wetsuit by October and I can’t even think of anything relevant from Guiding, other than that we did apple bobbing and cooking smores over candles at Rangers last week – not exactly spooky but reasonably … More How to get kids into kayaking

Getting my paddling mojo back (again)

October 24, 2024

The disaster that was the Great Big Paddle Parade gave my confidence a bit of a dent – or perhaps I should say that it happening right at the end of my paddling season might have. To spend the entire winter knowing that was what happened last time I went out on the water, that … More Getting my paddling mojo back (again)

Kayaking, Guides and resilience

October 17, 2024

One thing that we – and by “we”, I mean, the instructor, three assistants, manager & treasurer of our boathouse – have noticed over the last few years is a lack of resilence in the girls we take out to sea. It’s very easy to talk about “kids these days!” but a lot of the … More Kayaking, Guides and resilience

I did my Paddlesport Safety & Rescue training

September 12, 2024

And at last we come to the end of my paddling story! I don’t know what date this will end up being published because I’m writing it before we reopen the boat club for the season, so there might be stuff about boat club and my 2024 paddling and this might not end up where … More I did my Paddlesport Safety & Rescue training

A roll-practice pool session

September 5, 2024

With the knowledge that I’m now on my way towards some kind of leadership or coaching qualification, I became acutely aware that I can’t roll a kayak. Wouldn’t know where to start. But actually, this came about because I was looking at doing my PRS training, which was still called FSRT when I started looking … More A roll-practice pool session

Kayaking on Jökulsárlón

August 29, 2024

I spent nine or so days driving around Iceland’s Ring Road last summer. I’ve spent a lot of time in Iceland and covered most of it but I’ve never done a circuit of the Ring Road before. I didn’t plan to do it that time either. I planned to drive up to Akureyri and the … More Kayaking on Jökulsárlón

An overnight paddle adventure

August 22, 2024

Last summer I had a paddling overnight adventure. I’d not forgotten the beautiful night nav by sea kayak in October 2021 but the company hadn’t run that again. They did, however, have a slightly bigger adventure available and I thought I might do that. We’d have a night paddle by kayak, bivvy in the woods … More An overnight paddle adventure

Sea Kayak Award training

August 15, 2024

It only seemed five minutes since I was looking at the three levels of Sea Kayak Awards and deciding that was way beyond me when I found myself down at Studland on a miserable grey April day. Apparently I was going to spend two days doing my Sea Kayak Award. Why did I do this? … More Sea Kayak Award training

2024 season at the boathouse

July 25, 2024

Well, we’ve come to the end of the 2024 season, my second season, at our Girlguiding boathouse and so it’s time to reflect on the last few months. First of all, this so-called summer has done its level best to sabotage us! We had 19 dates in the calendar, seven boat club sessions and twelve … More 2024 season at the boathouse

I’ve only managed three or four selfies out on the water at the boathouse this summer - of the nine sessions I got to, one was at the pool, two were shore nights and we swapped two lots of kayaking for rafting, which only leaves four kayaking evenings and you do have to squeeze selfies around actually being a helper. But I want the occasional bit of photographic evidence I’ve been out on the water with Girlguiding, giving girls adventurous opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have! #shepaddles #girlguidingpaddles #kayaking #haveadventures Please, picture me in the reeds… taking shelter for a few minutes from an appallingly hot sun! #shepaddles #gopaddling #canoeing It’s the end of term and end of the boat club season for this year, so we presented the girls with their badges - our very own boathouse badge and the Guides Water adventure badge. They used to earn the Outdoor Pursuits interest badge, discontinued around 2018 but we’ve finally run out of stock of those, so if anyone has any ideas for replacements, let me know. #shepaddles #girlguidingpaddles #guidebadges Old Harry dead ahead! Taking it slowly and gently and lazily along the coastline and out to my ultimate destination, landing on Old Harry Rocks. #shepaddles #gopaddling #seakayaking #studland Get it from the right angle and Studland can almost look quite tropical. #shepaddles #gopaddling #kayaking Made it all the way to the road bridge in record time! #shepaddles #canoeing Last boat club selfie of the season #shepaddles #girlguidingpaddles #kayaking For the last boat club session of the year, we took the girls on a mini expedition. It was supposed to be through the marina and round the outside but it was a bit windy and the sea was a bit rough outside the shelter of the sea wall so we retraced our steps. #shepaddles #girlguidingpaddles #kayaking After three seasons, I finally have a boat that’s “mine”. Some of the other instructors have marked one of our four identical Jives as theirs but I just grab whichever is closest that’s unmarked. Now I have one with the footrests set up for me with my name written across it that everyone knows is mine! It’s a bit wonky but not bad considering I was sitting in the kayak when I wrote it - upside down. #shepaddles #kayaking #girlguidingpaddles
